Every farm needs a good farm dog and we believe that the English Shepherd is the best–or at least our favorite. In 2012, we will begin breeding and training pure-bred, registered English Shepherds on the Michael Family Farm.
English Shepherds come in a variety of color combinations of black, white and sable, with the tri-color (pictured) being our favorite. These dogs were designed by God to work for men on farms and they do their work instinctively. No one needs to train an English Shepherd to chase down a loose chicken, round up a flock of sheep or protect the family’s children. Once the dog is used to the normal routine, he becomes the farm’s watchman alerting everyone anytime anything abnormal is seen. At night, if the dog is barking, something is wrong. In fact, we’ve twice had a cows get into trouble in the middle of the night, and each time our English Shepherd led us to the trouble. They’re wonderful dogs.
However, these dogs need to be free to run and work. Although they are beautiful to look at, they do not belong in a suburban house. They will easily jump over or dig under backyard fences and bark up some unhappy neighbors. If you’re in search of a farm dog, though, this is our recommendation.
