Getting Started With Grapes

“The principal things necessary for the life of men, are water, fire, and iron, salt, milk, and bread of flour, and honey, and the cluster of the grape, and oil, and clothing.”  Sirach 39

As we continue to develop our farm, we seek to provide ourselves with the “principal things”.  Next on our list is “the cluster of the grape”.

We will be starting a vineyard on about 1/2 acre near the house next winter, growing Delaware (red) and Niagara (white) grapes.  Delaware grapes are an all-purpose (fruit, juice, wine) grape suited to our climate and Niagara are popular for fruit and juice.

Fortunately, our extension office provides an excellent and detailed guide (view here) to planting grapes here in North Carolina (we live in the “Piedmont” region), which we will be using as our primary source of direction.

I’ll post pictures and info as we get started with this later this winter.
